What the sim shows

Liquids that do not mix (immiscible) settle into two layers; the denser one forms the lower layer. Let them stand until the boundary is sharp. Take the stopper out first: with it in, no air can get in to replace the liquid leaving, so after a fraction of a cm³ the flow stops. Run the lower layer off through the tap, close the tap the moment the boundary reaches it, then change the beaker for the upper layer: the two layers must go into different containers. Densities (g/cm³): water 1.00, oil 0.92, hexane 0.66, dichloromethane 1.33. 50 cm³ of each.

  • Lower layer: the denser liquid
  • Right: what is in each beaker
