Electron beam in a magnetic field sim

Fire an electron beam across a deflection tube's screen between a pair of coils, predict with Fleming's left-hand rule (current opposite to the electrons' flow) which way it bends, turn up the coil current to watch it bend, reverse the field, and predict a positive beam as a thought experiment.

What the sim shows

Model. Electrons leave the gun at v = √(2eV ÷ m) and enter a uniform field B = (4/5)^(3/2) μ₀NI ÷ R from a Helmholtz pair (N = 500, R = 102 mm, chosen), zero before the screen. The force is F = q v × B, worked in the frame the student sees: Fleming's left-hand rule with the current opposite to the electrons' flow. The path is an arc of radius r = mv ÷ (Be) (beyond the syllabus), traced until it leaves the 10 cm × 8 cm grid. Not relativistic; no gravity; the beam has no width. The positive beam is a thought experiment with the same mass and speed. Nothing runs on its own: every change is a click, a drag or a key.

  • The fluorescent screen: the beam glows on it
  • Deflection tube on its stand, Helmholtz coils, EHT supply, heater supply, coil supply, reversing switch
