Dialysis: what crosses the membrane? sim
A bench model compares blood-side solution with dialysis fluid across a partially permeable membrane.
Dialysis · what crosses the membrane? · covers the GCSE, IGCSE, O-Level topic
What the sim shows
A bench model compares blood-side solution with dialysis fluid across a partially permeable membrane. Urea diffuses down its concentration gradient. Glucose stays in the blood-side solution when dialysis fluid has the same glucose concentration. Protein is retained. Values are relative teaching concentrations; this is not a clinical treatment calculation.
- Left: blood-side reservoir. Centre: membrane cartridge, shown with the two solution compartments side by side. Right: dialysis fluid. Flowing fluid is continually replaced; stopped fluid is a finite equal-volume compartment.
